Important Information On Unsecured CCTV Cameras
There has been recent public concern about access by foreign based websites to footage from camera systems including CCTV. These websites target camera systems that allow remote access via mobile phones, laptops and other IT devices. It is believed that images from as many as 300 homes and businesses across Ireland are being broadcast live across these websites. Cameras that have no password protection or use the default password provided by the manufacturer are most at risk.
The Private Security Authority (PSA) recommends that Installers of Security Equipment and their clients do not use default passwords for CCTV systems, on-line cameras or DVR equipment. Licensed contractors should always advise clients to change the default password and instruct them on how to do so.
The PSA advises the public to use only licensed PSA contractors to install and service their CCTV system. PSA licensed contractors have been vetted by An Garda Siochana and comply with industry standards on the installation and maintenance of CCTV systems. By using an unlicensed contractor you are allowing an illegal operator enter your home or business, giving them access to your security system and putting you, your family or business at risk.
It is also an offence to employ an unlicensed contractor to install or service an electronic security system with penalties ranging from a €3,000 fine to up to 5 years imprisonment.
If you have a CCTV system which allows remote access and have not set up your own password you should consider doing so immediately.
